£700 for WIMB CHARITY PARTNER BELFAST AND LISBURN WOMENS AID FESTIVE APPEAL
Our inaugural end of year review event on December 2nd - What Women Want - was a great success.
On the night FENI journalism students Jools Thompson and Helena McClenaghan did a bucket collection, and when Team WIMB topped that up we sent £700 to Belfast & Lisburn Women’s Aid festive appeal: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/BLWA-Xmas-2021
Patricia MacBride said: “Our ‘What Women Want’ end of year review highlighted that tackling violence against women and girls is a priority not just for activists and organisers, but for women everywhere.
“Women in Media Belfast is proud to be able to support Women’s Aid in their work providing frontline support to women and children in crisis.
“Every woman and girl deserves to live free from violence, harassment, control and coercion. Legislation can only do so much. We need families, friends and neighbours to challenge and confront these things when they see them and to say to women in crisis ‘I believe you..’
”Creating a culture where victims of violence and abuse are not stigmatised or afraid to seek help is the most valuable contribution we can make to ending this pandemic..”
Allison Morris said: “Women’s Aid is a charity very close to my heart.
“As a crime reporter what I want is to never have to cover another murder inquiry, another trial, another inquest linked to the preventable death of a woman.
“Women’s Aid have helped women I know and love, the work they do is invaluable. Domestic and sexual violence can impact anyone, regardless of race, religion or social class.
“We all have a role to play, the media included, in lifting the stigma, in changing societal attitudes, in making sure those in crisis are able to ask for help and support without judgement.”
Amanda Ferguson said: “I have seen first hand the amazing work Women’s Aid does supporting women and their families.
“What any woman wants is to feel safe, respected and loved.
”The festive season is a time of great fun and joy but the reality facing many women is anything but.
”We know the Women in Media Belfast donation made to Belfast & Lisburn Women’s Aid will support those who need their services, and we are so pleased to even be a small part of that.”
Women’s Aid tells us:
£10 could buy a new toy or book for a child in need, or essential toiletries for a woman and her children.
£20 could buy a woman or child a brand new set of Christmas pyjamas.
£50 could help a family put Christmas dinner on the table, or buy a woman or child a warm winter coat.
£100 could help a woman and her children buy emergency clothing if they have to flee home with very little or nothing.
